Henna in Weddings

I have noticed some trendy brides rocking the henna lately and wondered where the tradition came from.  All right, so I know it is mostly used in Indian weddings but what does the tradition mean?  How did it start? So I took my question to Google and I discovered that the centuries-old tradition started with the Bride.  It was a great way for brides to be adorned with beautiful patterns and was accessible even to families that could not afford to drape their daughters in gold.  Also, it has been a tradition in several countries around the world (like over 60) … I guess it’s not just India.  Henna is a tradition that is unique among cultures and even varies between families. Because Henna’s deep color is thought to symbolize the strength of the impending marriage, the darker the design is, the better.  Its hue also represents a husband’s love for his wife and even his family’s love for her.  This is why brides use special oils and treatments to darken the die.  As an added bonus, brides get a break from household duties until the henna has faded! Today the ritual has resurfaced and become more popular again.  Many brides are partaking in the traditional henna party called a Mehndi.  At a Mehndi the bride is lavished with extravagance and painstakingly covered in henna.  Traditionally, only the females closest to the bride were invited to this ritual but today it can be a huge affair with entertainment, drinks and food.  After all, Henna can take hours to apply and let dry so entertainment and drinks are a must...

Molly and Joe

Molly and Joe will be having a casually elegant wedding in June of 2012.  Molly is a Med. student and Joe is going to graduate school to become a Chiropractor.  This couple is great to work with; they are always busy but excited to make their wedding day truly special for their guests.  They will be hosting their big day at Lakefront Brewery where the beer will be flowing and the guests will be dancing! Molly knows what she wants and already had her photographer booked when we met.  The couple selected one of my favorites, Gloss Photography Studios.  Jaci, the owner and lady behind the lens at Gloss is super talented and her unique style is artistically beautiful. Joe and Molly’s engagement photos did not disappoint, here they are … full with light and love!     All photos were captured by Gloss Photography...

A Week at the Coffee Shop

With “engagement season” in full swing, the past week has been a hectic one for wedding professionals.  I spent it jumping from one coffee house to another and even had a Culver’s thrown into the mix (long story).  While sipping on honey lattes and chai tea, I met a ton of fun and creative brides and even a few grooms.  I am still a bit jittery from the massive caffeine intake but I am excited to learn more about each of the couples I met! Many of the potential clients I grabbed coffee with are still in the early stages of planning, which is wonderful because then they can take full advantage of my services and expertise.  Seeing the excitement and anticipation all of these couples had was so inspiring!  I am rejuvenated and excited to produce some beautiful new designs in the New Year! Here are just a few of the pictures I found inspiring after last week’s meetings.  As you can see, I am in for some pretty special weddings in the coming year! Shoe Love

At December’s staff meeting we talked about our brides, their dresses and of course their shoes.  We have some pretty fierce dresses coming up this wedding season and they are accompanied by some pretty fierce shoes! I love shoes, which might not be apparent by my everyday footwear because I typically wear the same few pairs (you know, the ones that are comfortable and match everything) but I have a huge collection of special shoes.  Yes, I called them special shoes and they are!  Most are stilettos, the higher the better and if they sparkle or have a bow I’m sold.  Anyway, my obsession with shoes absolutely carries over into an obsession with my brides’ wedding shoes.  I love when my clients pick something fun or unique and I adore wedding pictures that feature a beautiful pair of shoes as well. As we discussed dresses and shoes over dinner we had a brilliant idea: pretty shoes should be displayed and so, Shoe Love Posts were born.  Every week there will be a new pair of lovely heals (or flats but mostly heals) to drool over.  They may be wedding related or they may not but they will be pretty!  And since we didn’t particularly think it was appropriate to write a whole blog about shoes each week you will be able to find the goods on our Facebook page. Become a Fan of Tailored Engagements on Facebook to get all of our updates.  I promise they are full of pretty pictures, blog updates, tips and soon...

Tailored Staff Meeting

Staff meetings are one of my favorite traditions here at Tailored Engagements.  I love to cook, entertain, bake and socialize so naturally I decided to incorporate all of these things into our monthly meetings.  We get together to chat about weddings, upcoming projects, things that have inspired us and life in general.  I plan the menu, everyone helps cook (while testing the wine we will have with dinner) and the conversation flows. I cherish this time with my team.  Not only do we get a lot accomplished (no really, we actually do!) but we also get to relax and just enjoy each others’ company.  We spend a lot of time together so we might as well enjoy each other, right? This month’s meeting was Barefoot Contessa inspired and since I could feel the craziness of the Holidays bearing down on me, I wanted to do something easy.  All of the recipes came right from one of my favorite cook books: Barefoot Contessa.  How easy is that?  As usual, Ina pulled through for me in a pinch and everything was delicious.  Our staff meeting menu included … Starters: Chunky Blue Cheese and Yogurt Dip with veggies TruffledPopcorn (which we discovered would make a great late night wedding snack) Chipotle and Rosemary Roasted Nuts Main Course: Greek Panzanella (light on the bread, heavy on the tomatoes … gotta watch those carbs) The Ultimate Grilled Cheese (… who am I kidding I love carbs!!) Roasted Pear and Apple Sauce Dessert: Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies We worked, laughed, sipped wine without discriminating against red or white and we also came up with some great...
